The port which can offer the best circumstances of discharge for bulk carriers will attract the most. This means the port can grow, produce jobs and bring money into the hinterland.

The meaning of “best” discharge can be reduced to two points: Effectiveness and Reliability.

This is related to the skills of the people and their equipment with which the port is working and can offer it to the shipping companies.

Effective and Reliable Grabs

Good equipment means effective and reliable grabs with easy maintenance, fair spare part prices and a long life-time. This is the field of the grab constructor and manufacturer ORTS GmbH Maschinenfabrik (Germany). Flexibility, knowledge and wide spread experience since more than 35 years is the basement of this company. Best quality is ensured, because all grabs are self- constructed and self- manufactured in the own workshop in Germany.

The ORTS- grabs are well- known for their high effectiveness (high discharge- rates), reliability and the long lifetime over millions and millions of tons. A cheap grab can become very fast an expensive grab:
When it needs the first spare parts after short time of operation, has a breakdown during operation or never uses its full clamshell volume.

Some special features from the past are a 115t dead-weight salvage grab with tractive forces of over 400t, dredger grabs with 60t and 80t dead weight.

Clamshell, Dredger and Salvage Grabs

Grabs are available as normal clamshell grabs or as orange-peel grabs (polyp-grabs) in different variations and designs. ORTS was also a pioneer in enclosed clamshell designs to protect the environment from dust.

Size of the grabs required is according to equipment of the customer, special constructions are possible.

Dredger and salvage grabs are also part of the product range, additional a special grab for oil- recovering from the water- surface.

Also lifting beams with a SWL of 100t or more, flat- traverse- frames with a SWL up to 35t are in the program.

Supplying the crane equipment for operating electro- hydraulic grabs and installation of the same and repairs of grabs (also other fabricates) are carried out by ORTS.
