Denmark is the smallest of the Nordic countries with Norway to the north, Sweden to the north east and Germany to the south where it shares a land border.
Although Denmark is in both Scandinavia and northern Europe it is not part of the Scandinavian land mass.
Denmark is made up of the Jutland peninsula and over 400 islands of which 70 are inhabited the largest being Zealand Jutland and Funen.
The capital Copenhagen is on Zealand. Many of the larger islands are connected by bridges; Zealand is connected with Southern Sweden, Funen is joined with Zealand, and Jutland is connected with Funen.
Whilst Denmark has been a member of the EU since 1973 but it has not joined the eurozone and retains the Danish kroner (DKK) as the national currency. 
Denmark has a modern market economy with high volumes of foreign trade maintaining a positive balance of trade in both food and energy.
