Founded March 12th, 1972 as an engineer office and consulting company, specialised in constructions of grabs (main business) and nearly all kind of bulk handling equipment. In the beginning was only construction and sales, the manufacturing of all appliances took place at companies known by Mr. Eng. Sigvard F. Orts personal from his former job before. In the year 1974 manufacturing was concentrated at the work shop of “Franz Neumann Maschinenfabrik”, Sereetz (close to Lübeck, 60km from Hamburg). In 1985 Eng. Sigvard F. Orts overtook the company and since that day the company is named “ORTS GmbH Maschinenfabrik”.

Based of his wide spread and special experiences, Eng. Sigvard F. Orts has developed and constructed some of the biggest grabs are ever built. Manufacturing these big grabs got to success with help of other big German companies e.g. Blohm + Voss Shipyard in Hamburg.

The range of products are:

  • mechanical rope grabs
  • electro- hydraulic grabs
  • remote controlled diesel- hydraulic grabs
  • wood- grabs (for wood- bundles or wood- logs)

Additional:

  • crane equipment for operating electro- hydraulic grabs
  • cargo-turners
  • special constructions for cargo handling

Other constructions are heavy- lift beams, flat- traverse- frames and spreaders.

Special constructions are e.g. an oil- salvage grab for recovering row-oil from the water- surface (after ship- accidents), in the early 1980’s the first grabs with 100% enclosed buckets and a 115 t dead weight salvage grab for ship- wrecks. This grab is working in the Suez- Channel The biggest dredging grabs were constructed for St. Petersburg/ Russia (60 t and 80 t dead weight) in the middle 1980’s and they are still successful in operation.

Main customers are shipping companies, where the grabs has to stand the rough conditions on sea- going vessels, charging and discharging the vessel in every corner of the world.

Also repairs on grabs from other manufacturers are carried out many times.

At the end of 1990’s ORTS overtook the last drawings from the bankrupt grab- manufacturer ZGS (former “VEB Schmiede und Schweißwerk Zwickau”) the leading grab manufacturer in the former East Germany (GDR / DDR). ORTS is able to provide, as far as the drawings are available, former customers from ZGS with spare parts for their grabs.

In the last 30 years ORTS was constructing (and since 1985 also self manufacturing) several thousand grabs.

Even competitors (e.g. Peiner- SMAG) asked for “know- how” and bought ready grab constructions from Eng. Sigvard F. Orts. Most of the biggest grabs in the world are constructed by Eng. S.F. Orts.
